The down jacket is a winter favorite, but one that is so often done poorly. When most people get a down jacket, they get something that is super puffy and makes them look like the Michelin Man. A puffy jacket can be a really cool and modern look, but you have to make sure you get a slim-fitting jacket. Thankfully, up-and-coming superstar Spurr has solved your puffy jacket problem. Much like the Burberry bomber jacket, this may not be for those whose winters drop below freezing, but it will definitely keep you warm when it starts to get chilly. It’s slim cut and will give you a very stylized look come winter. Look for the jacket at Bergdorf Goodman and Scoop.

The big day is here. The most conflicting shopping day of the year. On one hand you want to get outside and pick up all the deals you can, on the other hand you don’t want to go anywhere near a store for fear of being trampled. If you’re in New York, we’ll point you to Racked NY for all of the sales that are worth checking out. Good luck…

So we wouldn’t exactly suggest this one for a winter in Maine, but if your winters are on the more mild side, then take a look at Burberry’s Quilted Bomber Jacket. When everyone else wears a peacoat or topcoat you can break the mold with this guy. It’s nice and trim so it’ll be flattering to your figure if you’re tired of clunky outerwear. You can always trust Christopher Bailey when it comes to design and Burberry’s quality speaks for itself. This will definitely get the job done for most of the winter, but if the temperature really dips down you can always layer to keep warm. Pick up your Bomber for a reasonable $450 at Burberry.

We’re not the biggest fan of topcoats, but that obviously doesn’t mean they can’t look good. First things first, they need to be slim fitting. If you have a clunky topcoat, you’ll look like a clown. As we all know, it’s tough to get a tailored fit for a reasonable price, but luckily Gap has a solid option that won’t kill your bank account. When most respectable topcoats cost close to $1,000, Gap has managed to put a hell of a lot of style into their $150 option. Sure, it may not be made from Cucinelli cashmere, but this wool-blend option will get the job done. Wear it unbuttoned and be ready to recieve some compliments. You can get yours for $150 at Gap.

We love ourselves a good trench, but sometimes that Burberry guy won’t withstand the New York winter. When the temperature really starts to dip, don’t be afraid to reach for a wool trench coat. Luckily, you won’t have to reach too deep into your pockets to afford one. Banana Republic makes a very solid option for a very affordable price of $280. It has the classic beige color with military designs–perfect if you’re looking for a more modern take on the classic jacket. You can pair it with a suit, a button down, or even jeans and a t-shirt and you’ll look good while staying warm. Pick yours up before they run out. Get it in stores or online for $280.

We feel it’s only right to update you on A Continuous Lean’s new online shop. It is one of our favorite blogs and we get a bunch of good ideas from it. It always has cool original content and doesn’t bullshit you like so many of the other guys out there. Yesterday, the online shop went open for business. The store has 12 items designed by Michael Williams–the man behind the blog. There are tons of small bags that he did as well as a few collaborations with Mark McNairy and Billykirk. We think that it’s definitely something you should check out, especially if you’re a real “designed and made in America” kind of guy. Check out the shop here.

Why did GQ just profess their love for these terrible hats? We understand that Jack Nicholson’s costuming in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a perfect job at using clothing to breathe attitude, but it’s not a handsome look. We know Johnny Depp is alternative and generally pretty cool, but it’s still not a handsome look, especially with a Tom Ford suit.
To be fair, this isn’t an all-out demotion of any knit cap. A light cashmere piece can be very flattering, and APC and Band of Outsiders have rolled out some excellent striped pieces. But the linty, crumpled, CVS-discount hat that may cost you as much as $200 with some high-end designers is not the right look to be honing. We love individuality – please, hone your individuality. But try to look good while doing it.

Before we kick things off, here’s a quick PSA: this list is all about cold weather. No trenches, no rain jackets, no golf jackets. Warmth.
So to kick it off, we have the J. Crew Authentic Peacoat. Coming in at $275 from one of the more celebrated brands out there, and boasting a slim, yet perfectly traditional design, this is your go-to, your starter, your Ole Reliable. When you finally realize how much outerwear does for your wardrobe, how much a slim cut piece emphasizes your tall and lean figure (or at least gives the illusion of it) more than any other piece in a wardrobe, when you’re fed up with looking clunky while trying to stay warm, fear not, for J. Crew truly has your back.
In a world where everyone tries to make their mark with new ideas, sometimes it’s nice to just find the perfect wearable piece, with just enough modern design to keep you looking fresh. We suggest navy for the prepster, and black for the urbanite.
Get it here.

Each season allows for a slightly different take on formal. In the Summer you can mess around with a light blue shirt or even a tan suit, but Winter means tartan. Here’s how…
Think about this look for a second. Only a couple of items, right? But look how much you’ve uped the ante. Dries Van Noten’s awesome double-breasted tux gets the ball rolling by giving you that elegant Tom Ford look. It’s nice and trim so you won’t look like an old clunker but rather like a 21st century badass. A satin bow tie is important because you want to match the material to the lapels of the jacket. The real kicker is obviously the tartan dress shirt. This one, by Reiss, has that perfect pattern that is very seasonal and appropriate. It will set you apart from the rest of the penguins without making you look too cocky. Pair it with some classy wingtips to show you’re not all about a modern splash and you have a look that will put everyone else to shame. One that will get you the girl
Dries Van Noten Double Breasted Tuxedo, $1,383 at Browns
Reiss Tartan Dress Shirt, $155 at Reiss
Ralph Lauren Satin Bow Tie, $85 at Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren Albin Black Wingtip, $495 at Ralph Lauren
