Bags Of Fun

Every so often a new must-have IT bag comes along, often out of nowhere to lay the competition to waste.  As soon as the new offering from Louis Vuitton was unveiled we knew the Speedy 25 Badoulière was destined  to become the most covetable bag around and a future classic to boot. The first star to be pictured with the new bag was probably Sarah Jessica Parker. In fact she was captured by paparazzi twice sporting it, and since then t has been sheen on the arm of many an A Lister including the stunning Diane Kruger and Jessica Simpson, pictured below.

So, what is so good about it, we hear you ask?  It’s ideally proportioned to carry the essentials –  a purse, a diary, a spare pair of flatties as well as that all-important makeup. Not only that but it’s also perfect for draping across your body or for carrying on your arm and, with its matt monogram, it is both classy and unstated but still exuding a little bit of bling.  In fact, it’s just about perfect – if only we had £1420.00 lying around.

Paint It Black

Black, leather, moody, brooding.  These are just a few of the adjectives that could be used to describe fashion’s dark almost Gothic  trend this season.  Not everyone has followed this line of thinking, as some designers have opted for a  lighter, more airy style for winter, but many notable names, including Dior and Gucci have gone instead for something more sombre and brooding, a little gothic glam as the nights become darker and colder.

Key pieces for this look include obsidian black coats, including many in leather, as well as studded shoes and boots that have a touch of the dominatrix look about them.  We appreciate this may not be for everyone so if that all sounds just a tad too full on, why not dip your toe in the water so to speak with a watered-down version of this look.  Cropped jackets in greys and even dark patterned tops, dresses and pencil slim trousers that all suit that pensive, brooding theme all look fantastic but remain a little more accessible .  Statement jewellery featuring bright sparkling stones, should finish off the look. And so where can you you go to dress in this style? Why not try Reiss for their contrast jersey top at just £89.00 or Jigsaw for a biker effect cardigan-cum- jacket, pictured

Memories Of Punk Rock

Just last week my wife and I were out for the evening. As we made our way home looking for a taxi to take us across the city, I suggested we went for a stroll to help us digest our dinner – we’re at that age I’m afraid. As we wandered around we passed the grand university buildings where we used to study and reminisced about the time we spent there over thirty years ago. The young man at the entrance to the building came up to us and asked if we’d like to look around, for old times sake.

We jumped at the chance and soon we were standing in the main reception room of the building , a place I first set foot in in the summer of 1977.  That was my first experience, not only of university, but also of of punk rock. Britain was alight to the sound of The Sex Pistols and The Clash that summer and their influence on the young people of Britain was seen in all the universities and colleges, from the incredible powerful music to the distinctive  punk rock fashion.

My kids tell me that there is still punk rock today, but for me punk will always mean that summer of 1977.
